Getting out on the water is a great way to relax and unwind, and many people want to become more active in water sports. But if you’re a newbie, it can be confusing to know where to start.

One question you’ll need to answer early on will be how to make your dog comfortable while you’re out on the water. Will you enjoy and be safe when boating with dogs?

So what should you know when boating with pets? Keep reading to learn more.

    Invest in a Life Jacket

When you want to go boating with dogs, make sure they’re wearing a life jacket at all times. Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, an accident can happen quickly and you want to be prepared. Keep an eye on them while you’re boating and make sure they’re not getting too tired or cold.

If they start to look exhausted, take them out of the water and let them rest. Then, invest in a life jacket and make sure it fits them properly.

Bring Along Plenty of Fresh Water

When it comes to staying hydrated on a boat, dogs are just like people—they need to drink lots of water to stay healthy and happy.

To keep your pup hydrated on your next water adventure, first, bring plenty of freshwaters to drink. Encourage them to drink regularly throughout the day, even if they don’t seem thirsty. If your dog is hesitant to drink from a bowl, try using a water bottle with a drinking spout designed for dogs.

Avoid giving your dog salt water to drink, as this can make him even more dehydrated. Lastly, keep an eye for signs of dehydration, such as excessive panting, lethargy, or dry gums. If you see those signs, go back and see a veterinarian.

By learning these simple tips, you and your furry baby can enjoy a fun and safe boating adventure together!

    Bring Along Some Dog-Friendly Snacks

As you prepare for your next adventure such as boating with your dog, be sure to keep some dog-friendly snacks on hand. This will help to keep your pooch happy and hydrated while out on the water. Some great options include rawhide bones, carrots, and apples.

Disinfect Your Dog’s Paws After Each Swim

It’s important to disinfect your dog’s paws after each swim. This will help prevent any bacterial infections that could be harmful to your dog. Gently clean your dog’s toes as you clean to check for debris and irritation, and dry thoroughly.

Keep an Eye on Your Dog at All Times

Always keep an eye on them while on the boat, as they can easily fall overboard. When this happens, you need to have a plan to get them back to safety.
